History

It was in 1803 that a class of believers first met in Deerfield, OH 25 miles west of Youngstown, these believers soon moved into what is now Downtown Youngstown. The original church was a log school house, and later in a log home near the very site of the current Trinity Church.

The first pastor, Dr. Shadrack Bostwick began his class with a handful of men and women who were hoping to find salvation, including Isaac Powers and his wife, Moses Crawford and his wife, John Hogue and a Mr. Braden. These early Methodists were to begin the seed of a community of faith that has been a force in the downtown area for over 2 centuries. Church buildings were built in 1830, 1861, and in 1883 the current building was built.

In 1842 Reverend Dillon Prosser became the first full-time preacher. In 1855 a new member came to Trinity, Richard Brown. Mr. Brown had grown from a man of nothing to a man of great affluence, and it was his generosity that made possible the great church that we now occupy.

In 1942, with World War II in progress, the people of Trinity Church began a major renovation and rebuilding process. This time also saw the construction of the east wing of the building including the Chapel of Friendly Bells, and the current pipe organ.

Now, over 200 years later Trinity is still downtown, still preaching God’s word to the people of Youngstown, and still a spiritual force in the greater downtown area.
